Volkswagen ID.4: Dead—For Now

  • Volkswagen is ending production of the ID.4 in Chattanooga.
  • The shift will make room for the 2027 Atlas.
  • The company promises ‘a future version of ID.4’ for North America.

The Volkswagen ID.4, as we know it, is dead in the US. The company is ending production of the electric SUV at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, manufacturing facility to make room for higher-volume models. That said, it may not be the end of the line for the ID.4 nameplate entirely.

According to VW, “a future version of ID.4 is currently planned for the North American market.” While the German automaker stopped short of releasing any official details, the good news for fans of VW’s compact electric SUV is that a newer, better model is likely on the horizon.

The manufacturing shift in Chattanooga will make room for the 2027 Atlas, which the company debuted just a few weeks ago at the New York Auto Show. It makes sense; the Atlas has been VW’s second‑best‑selling model for the past three years, and the new version hopes to make an even bigger dent in the competitive three-row SUV space.

The ID.4, meanwhile, hasn’t exactly been a big seller. With Americans continuing to turn their nose up at EVs, VW sold just over 22,000 examples of the ID.4 in 2025. That number represents an increase of 31 percent compared to 2024, but it’s still a relative drop in the bucket. The company sold over 71,000 examples of the Atlas over the same period by comparison. As the company notes:

‘The EV market continues to challenge the industry, requiring measured decisions throughout the last few years to navigate this unpredictability. As part of the focus toward higher‑volume products that meet market demand, Volkswagen will no longer assemble the ID.4 in Chattanooga starting mid-April 2026.’

As for the current ID.4, buyers will still be able to get their hands on the electric SUV for the 2026 model year. Production will officially come to an end in mid-April 2026, which means 2026 models should remain on dealer lots through the end of the year.

The Next ID.4 (Or ID. Tiguan?)

There were reports (including on this very website) that VW might ditch the ID.4 name entirely and call its next electric SUV the ID. Tiguan. CEO Thomas Schäfer said that the company was looking to revamp its naming strategy and use more “well-known names” in the future. This latest news from VW, though, suggests the company might stick with the ID.4 name for the foreseeable future.

Whatever VW decides to call its next electric SUV, don’t expect a dramatic departure from the current ID.4. The next ID.4 / ID. Tiguan will likely ride on the automaker’s updated sit MEB+ platform, which should yield major efficiency and performance improvements over the current MEB architecture.

As VW adds more hard buttons back into its vehicles, the next ID.4 should undoubtedly have a host of tactile controls in its cabin. The exterior design, meanwhile, shouldn’t stray far from the current look, with subtle styling changes to bring the next ID.4 in line with the rest of the updated lineup.

Motor1’s Take: As the mass EV dieoff continues, VW is officially pulling the plug on the current ID.4 for the US. That said, the company still clearly believes in electrification as it plans a new ID.4 for the future.
