Xiaomi gives first look at YU7 electric SUV due in mid-2025

  • Xiaomi will follow up its debut SU7 electric sedan with the YU7 electric SUV
  • The Xiaomi YU7 is slated to launch in China around mid-2025
  • The vehicle bears a resemblance to the V-12-powered Ferrari Purosangue

Xiaomi may be best known for its smartphones, but the Chinese technology company is quickly becoming a recognized name in the world of electric vehicles following the success of its debut EV, the SU7 sedan, which launched late last year.

Now, Xiaomi is working on a second model, a compact SUV called the YU7. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun took to social media on Monday to share the first official photos of the YU7 after images of the SUV surfaced on the website of the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The Xiaomi boss said the YU7 will launch in China around mid-2025, where it will compete with the Tesla Model Y and other compact electric SUVs.

The YU7 features styling themes similar to the SU7, and from some angles, it resembles Ferrari’s Purosangue SUV. Both SUVs share a similar dip in the hood, straight daytime running lights splitting the headlights, and black-finished wheel arch protectors.

No technical details have been released yet, but the YU7 is likely related to the SU7, which offers models delivering 295 and 664 hp, with an upcoming variant promising as much as 1,527 hp. The current battery options for the SU7 include 73.6- and 94.3-kwh units, and Xiaomi has promised to introduce 132- and 150-kwh batteries in 2025.

The SU7 has received praise from Ford CEO Jim Farley, who had one shipped to the U.S. for testing. He said during an October interview with the Everything Electric Show that he doesn’t want to give the car up.

The SU7 has also proven to be a hit in China, where Xiaomi has achieved more than 100,000 sales so far this year, thanks in part to a starting price of about $30,000. In October, the company also revealed an experimental version of the SU7 that lapped the Nürburgring in 6:46.874, the fastest time set by a four-door car, regardless of powertrain.
