Nissan Z recalled because pedestrian-detection sensors may not work

Nissan is recalling 4,036 Z sports cars because malfunctioning sensors could increase the risk of injury to pedestrians in a collision.

The recall, which encompasses 2023 and 2024 models, stems from righthand pedestrian-detection sensors that may be reversed in the front-bumper wiring harness. This could prevent the pop-up hood, a feature designed to minimize the potential for injuries to pedestrians struck by cars, from activating as intended, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

2024 Nissan Z Nismo

Nissan estimates that 100% of the recalled vehicles have this issue, which was discovered by a technician when a trouble code was thrown, but told the NHTSA that it is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or warranty claims related to the problem.

The remedy is replacement of the front-bumper harness, which dealers will do free of charge. Nissan expects to mail owner notification letters Dec. 12. Owners can also contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 for more information. Nissan’s reference number for this recall is R24B6.

2024 Nissan Z Nismo

The Z arrived for the 2023 model year as the replacement for the long-serving Nissan 370Z, combining elements of that car’s platform with updates like a modern infotainment system and twin-turbo V-6 engine. The package is wrapped in styling that more directly references past Z models, particularly the original Datsun 240Z and the 1990s Z32.

For 2024, Nissan added a more track-focused Z Nismo model to the lineup boasting an extra 20 hp and a host of chassis upgrades, along with a Heritage Edition celebrating the Z-car’s 55th anniversary. A report from September that Nissan has filed a trademark application for the “Z Warrior” name also indicates that a Z Safari off-roader might be on the way.
