The First Front-Wheel Drive Subaru in Years

Like hybrids, Subaru is getting more serious about EVs. On Thursday, it revealed its third new model within after the Solterra and Trailseeker, the Uncharted. Like its larger electric siblings, the Uncharted is based on a Toyota, the new CH-R in this case, but features unique Subaru styling and chassis tuning.

For the first time in a very long time for a Subaru in America, the Uncharted is available in front-wheel drive form. Subaru says it will build the Premium FWD variant in limited numbers, with 221 horsepower from its single electric motor. The pricier Uncharted Sport and GT models will get dual-motor all-wheel drive, with 338 hp in total. For those, Subaru claims a 5.0-second 0-60 mph run, which makes it quicker than the current WRX.

All versions of the Uncharted use a 74.4-kWh battery pack, with Subaru estimating a range of over 300 miles for the Premium FWD, and 290 miles for the Sport and GT variants. It will come with a Tesla-style NACS charging port standard, and it’s capable of 150 kW of charging for a 10-80% charge time of around 30 minutes. Not mind-blowing figures, but not bad either.

Subaru says it developed a unique chassis tune for the Uncharted designed for off-pavement performance. All-wheel drive models will also get the company’s X-Mode drive modes, which optimize the car for lower-grip surfaces.

Inside, it’s very much as it is with the new Toyota CH-R, with a small 7-inch digital gauge cluster paired with a large 14-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are also dual wireless phone chargers up front. All models are well equipped with standard heated seats, heated outdoor mirrors, a windshield de-icer, a power tailgate, and a full suite of active safety systems.

The Sport model adds niceties like a heated steering wheel and surround-view cameras, while the GT adds cooled seats and heat for the outer rear seats, 20-inch wheels, and an upgraded Harmon-Kardon sound system.

This is Subaru’s smallest EV, nearly 7.0 inches shorter in length than the Solterra, which puts it right around 177.6 inches total. That makes it only slightly longer than a Subaru Crosstrek. Yet the Uncharted’s 25.0 cubic feet of rear cargo space betters the Crosstrek’s 20.0 cubic feet.

Subaru says it’ll announce pricing nearer to the Uncharted’s early 2026 on-sale date. We’d expect a base MSRP somewhere in the mid-$30,000 range, but with tariffs and whatnot, we’re not going to bet on anything.
