Mercedes-Benz has expanded a recall of loose sunroof panels that could detach and let glass panels loose on roadways, the NHTSA disclosed Monday. This marks the third recall for the same issue.
The latest recall adds 33,456 older models to the previous recall issued Dec. 23, 2022 for 123,696 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, CLK, E-Class, and CLS models. That recall was classified as 22V-954 and was an expansion of another recall; Mercedes had been investigating field reports of incidents outside of the U.S. five years earlier, since December 2017.
In the recalls, the glass sunroof panel can detach from the vehicle while in motion due to the adhesive deteriorating over time. The wrong primer or bonding agent may have been used by the supplier in production. A flying glass panel could increase the risk of a crash and pose a higher likelihood of injury for road users, according to the NHTSA.
Owners or passengers may notice excessive wind noise coming from the sunroof, or the panel could loosen even in the closed position.
The expanded recall affects the following vehicles:
- 2002-2007 Meredes-Benz C230
